How and why do we play games? - Designing your games for fun!

Wed, Apr 13, 5:00 PM (BST)

About this event

How and why do we play games?

If you enjoy designing games and want to get into the more theoretical side, this talk is great for you!

In this event, we'll travel through the realm of games and discuss some of the reasons why we as human beings play video games, how to use that knowledge to further our own game-design, and finally, how to make our games more immersive with all of this in hand. We'll be covering a few key topics in fairly good detail, discussing our thoughts on them but also how we can apply this knowledge to our games!

Some of the topics we'll be discussing include:

  • "Why do we play games?"
  • "What is fun, and what is excitement theory?"
  • "Types of and approaches to Game Design"
  • "Why Immersion is a faulty concept?"
  • "The Player Involvement Model"

Attendees will encouraged to interact and take part throughout the talk! However, it's not compulsary :)

  • IMPORTANT - This talk is ideal/aimed at developers who have a passion for designing games! What we'll be discussing in the talk is largely theoretical, and is less about specific development practices such as programming and building, but more about understanding our consumer and designing features and games around our audience bases.
  • You must be above the age of 13 to attend!
  • The event will be hosted on Bevy Virtual!
